Frequently Asked Questions - Garbage & Recycle Changes

When does the new garbage and recycle program begin?  July 1, 2018

Is garbage and recycle pick up still on Friday?  Yes (holiday schedule may vary)

Will I receive two carts? Yes, each residence will received a 95 gallon cart with a yellow lid that will be used for recycling and a second cart with a black lid for garbage.

What are the garbage cart sizes? 

  • 35 gallon cart that will be picked up every other week and cost $12.50 per month (holds approx. three - 13 gallon white bags).                                             
  • 65 gallon cart that will be picked up weekly and cost $18.50 per month (holds approx. six - 13 gallon white bags).

Will my recycling still be picked up weekly even if I choose every other week garbage pick up? Yes

Will the carts be delivered to my house? Yes, Johnson County Refuse will delivered to each residence.

Who owns the carts and what if they become damaged? Johnson County Refuse owns the carts and will repair damaged carts.

When is the mailer due that I received asking me to choose which size garbage cart I want?  May 7th

What if I'm not sure which size garbage cart I need?  Choose a size for now and you may switch before Oct. 1st.  After Oct.1st a $30 fee will be charged.

What if I did not receive a mailer?  Call City Hall at 624-3755.

Where are the City drop boxes? Between City Hall and the Fire Station (drive through), Bridge Bank just before the drive through ATM, Sam's Main Street Market (on the wall to the left of second entrance doors). 

What about the $6.35 I am currently charged monthly? You will not be charged the $6.35 after July 1st.  After July 1st you will be charge $12.50 or $18.50 monthly. 

When will the new $12.50 or $18.50 fee start?  The fee begins on the July water bill that will be due on August 15th.

Can I keep my current recycle bins?  Yes, you may keep the current recycle bins to use as needed however, after July 1st they cannot be use for curbside pick up. 

What if I have more garbage than fits into my 35 or 65 gallon cart?  New garbage stickers will be available for $3 each. Place bags on top of garbage cart.

What if I have extra yellow garbage stickers as of July 1st that I have not used? Return to City Hall for a refund.

Are the green yard waste stickers still good after July 1st? Yes

Why is the garbage and recycle program changing?  The City of Solon contracts with Johnson County Refuse for garbage and recycling service and in effort to reduce injuries, their company is transitioning to automated trucks for garbage/recycling pick up.
