Water Department
The Solon Water Department was established in 1902. Today, Solon obtains its potable water from 3 ground water wells. These wells are up to 350-feet deep into rock, drawing water from the Silurian Aquifer. Solon adds fluoride to the water before distribution to aid in the prevention of tooth decay and we chlorinate for disinfection. Disinfection kills or inactivates harmful microorganisms which can cause illnesses such as typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and giardiasis. We currently have 1,365 water meters within the city of Solon that register water use to the homes and businesses. We use two storage tanks for water supply and fire suppression. The most visible is the 200,000-gallon elevated water tower. The other storage tank is a 400,000-gallon ground storage tank located in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Water is supplied to your home or business through over 17 miles of water mains that are sized 4-inches through 12-inches, 181+ fire hydrants and over 380 valves.
