City Water Is Safe

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water. The American Water Works Association notes that EPA encourages the continued use of tap water, as COVID-19 has not been detected in drinking water supplies. EPA has established regulations with treatment requirements for public water systems that prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water and wastewater. COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective.

Social Distancing and Tips for General Prevention

The best way to prevent the spread of illness is to avoid being exposed or spreading it to others. To practice social distancing:

  • Stay home.
  • Keep a distance of at least six feet between yourself and others.
  • Eliminate unnecessary outings in public spaces.
  • Reduce the frequency of important trips outside the home. For example, get groceries once per week, rather than three times a week.
  • Conduct business and communications with those outside your home with virtual meetings, by phone, email, or mail when possible.
  • Use curbside pickup, when available.
  • Do not bring other members of your household on errands and shopping trips unless necessary.
  • Social distancing does not mean limiting yourself to staying in your home. Outdoor spaces, including parks and trails, are a good way to get fresh air, exercise, and de-stress.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • If a tissue is not available, cough into your elbow.
  • Wash your hands using soap and water for at least 20 seconds (especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing).
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Public health experts such as the Iowa Department of Public Health and the United States Centers for Disease Control are the best resources for accurate information about COVID-19.
